Matt kindly agreed to let me show some of his excellent fabrication skills to convert a full
suspension MTB into a high performance E Bike. Matt used 15Ah pouch cells with termination parts designed and manufactured
by ourselves, a 500W rear Mac motor, 16S 80A constant BMS and 48V 5A charger amongst other items to
help create this very original machine.
Matt followed the termination instructions to create 2 blocks of 8S 15Ah cells. Each cell weighs 400g, so offers both
class leading energy density as well as exceptional power density for LiFePO4. He then went onto to fit Balance wires and
power cables as was required. Perspex was used to mount the BLDC controller and the 16S 80A BMS. The 2 8S packs are then fitted
into some very nicely made enclosures. A Carbon Fibre effect cover was then fitted over the assembly
onto which a Wattmeter was installed to give a convenient way to monitor real time and cumulative data. A
500W Mac rear motor, painted to match the frame is used to propel the bike. This has resulted in a nicely rounded package
that gives a top speed of 48kph or 30mph with performance and efficiency figures that Matt is very satisfied with. Matt is
especially impressed with the battery pack performance which he's described as "Rock Solid" and displays very
little voltage sag even when the pack is nearing the end of the discharge. In fact the 30A current limit that he has set the
controller to is a very light load for cells of this caliber that will easily provide current levels of 150A or more on a
constant basis and considerably more for bursts.
Chris Jones, Perth Chris is building a high powered E Motorcycle using twin Agni motors
and over 6KWhrs of the A123 20Ah cells.
